Illustrator and painter Mitsumasa Anno was given a rare honour in 2011 and 2012, when he was allowed access into the private gardens of the imperial family in order to paint its flowers and put together a picture book for the royals. The fruits of that endeavour can now be viewed by common folk as well, as Anno exhibits 130 watercolour pieces related to the project at Yokohama's Sogo Museum. Sounds like a fitting start to the city's art spring.
