Since she shot her first Broadway show in 1986, Joan Marcus has become a trusted chronicler of Broadway’s greatest plays and musicals from season to season. Her pictures adorn programs, posters and ads, achieving iconic status (depending on the show). We asked this storied shutterbug to sift through her studio archives and pic a shot from each year, to give us a wide-angle view of her career—and the changing look of Broadway—from 1990 to 2015. From The Lion King to this year’s Tony Award best-musical winner, Fun Home, she shared her favorite frames. It’s a funny thing about theatrical production shots: In a way they’re quite ephemeral, used to accompany a story or review, but when you assemble them together, they become a wonderful time machine you can step into to relive lost moments.
