If the past year of utter uncertainty has you considering a career overhaul, you’re not alone. There’s plenty of new research showing that lots of people are ready to hand in their notice and make a job pivot. And if you also happen to be a history buff with a penchant for beer, we have good news: your dream job is out there… in the UK county of Lincolnshire, 115 miles north of London.

Lincolnshire’s county council is actively looking for someone to explore and survey the pubs located along a 50-mile stretch of its coast. Sound intriguing? Okay, so you’ll have to do a bit more than sip pints all day, but it sounds like a fairly rewarding position.

The lucky candidate who becomes Heritage Project Officer will spend a year researching and recording the public houses’ architectural and social history. The job description goes on to say that these responsibilities are ‘urgently needed to enhance the local historic environment records, raise awareness in response to the threat of pub closures, and help the hospitality sector recover’. It’s all part of the Inns on the Edge project, which is funded by Historic England. In other words: it’s important, direly needed work that could help influence future conservation efforts. With beer.

Ready to submit your application, pack your bags and move to Lincolnshire for the next year? You should have a degree or relevant experience in history, archaeology, building conservation or something similar, plus some knowledge of the area. On a personal level, strong communication skills are essential and good time management is a big plus. (It’s all too easy to get sidetracked when you’re exploring ancient pubs.)

The year-long contract position fetches a salary of £25,991–£28,672, a pension, a benefits package and discounts. Ready to gush about preserving the world’s oldest drinking spots? Good, because you’re going to have to write a cover letter, too. Pour yourself a beer and apply for the job – we have a hunch this opportunity will go fast.
