The hotly tipped Nomadland won Best Film and Best Director for Chloé Zhao in a BAFTA awards that threw up few genuine surprises but lots of worthy winners.

Zhao became only the second woman to win Best Director, after Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker. She was joined on the winners roster by Nomadland lead Frances McDormand who won Best Actress for the second time. She also won for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri in 2017.

Anthony Hopkins won his third Best Actor Bafta for The Father. The Welsh titan has previously won for The Silence of the Lambs and The Remains of the Day.

The awards, held in London’s Royal Albert Hall and with nominees tuning in via Zoom, dished out plenty of good news to home-town talent, too. Emerald Fennell won Best Original Screenplay for Promising Young Woman, which also won Outstanding British Film.

Daniel Kaluuya followed up his Golden Globes win for Judas and the Black Messiah with another Best Supporting Actor award. Best Supporting Actress was a hugely popular win for Minari’s Yuh-Jung Youn.

Outstanding British Debut went to another Londoner, Remi Weekes, for his Netflix migrant horror film His House. Pixar’s Soul won Best Animation, and Film Not in the English Language was an emotional win for Thomas Vinterberg’s tragedy-touched Another Round.

Rocks’ Bukky Bakray won this year’s EE Rising Star award.
