A movie as profoundly traumatising as Elem Klimov’s antiwar nightmare probably shouldn’t be so easily accessible, but then, in a world growing increasingly numb to the atrocities scrolling by our social media feeds, maybe a good, hard psychological shock is what everyone needs. Set in 1940s Byelorussia, it watches as a teenage soldier (Aleksei Kravchenko, phenomenal) has the light snuffed from his eyes by the terrors visited upon him and his people by the occupying Nazis. In pure cinematic terms, it’s a remarkable achievement, mixing unflinching realism and hallucination into sui generis horror. In human terms, it’s the toughest of tough watches — but essential.
Even in the era of streaming overload, it’s hard to find a platform catering to fans of classic and cult cinema. But what if we told you there's a website out there hiding a trove of incredible films, available entirely for free? And what if we told you it’s called YouTube?
It costs a lot to be entertained these days. Just a few years ago ‘cord-cutting’ seemed like a life hack that’d save TV watchers a tonne of cash. Once the streaming revolution truly kicked in, though, the subscriptions piled up, and with recent price increases and crackdowns on password sharing – not to mention sheer overload of choice – it’s making some of us gaze at our old cable bills with wistful longing.
But what if we told you there was an easily accessible website out there with a trove of legitimately awesome movies available to stream 24/7, and entirely for free? It’s called YouTube. Yes, the site known primarily for instructional videos about how to install a new sink and use an air fryer is hiding an impressive library of classic cinema of the sort many other streamers don’t bother with – from silent era milestones to essential deep cuts. If you don’t mind sitting through a bunch of commercials, YouTube has a full channel of ad-supported modern films as well.
